THE THURSDAY AUGUST 12 CONCERT AT SWEETSER PARK HAS BEEN CANCELLED. THIS CONCERT WILL BE HELD ON THE SOUTH AMHERST COMMON IN SOUTH AMHERST
The Amherst Community Band is made up of people of all ages who rehearse and perform unique concerts each summer for free in Amherst. The band is conducted by Dr. Timothy Todd Anderson -the UMass Amherst Marching Band Conductor.
The concert “Anniversaries We Missed” features songs that celebrate events that would have happened in 2020: Victory at Sea by Richard Rodgers (yes, the Broadway Richard Rodgers), with 2020 having been the 75th anniversary of the end of World War 2
Holst First Suite in E flat, as 2020 was the 100th anniversary of its premiere.
Military March by Beethoven, as 2020 was the 250th anniversary of his birth
Irish Rhapsody by Clare Grundman, as we've missed 2 St. Patricks Day celebrations.
Cosmopolitan America by Helen May Butler. Look her up. She was known as "The Lady Sousa" and led an all female band in the early parts of the 20th century. This is in honor of 2020 being the 100th anniversary of Women's Suffrage
If My Friends Could See Me Now, from the Broadway musical "Sweet Charity," which was commonly performed in the early days of the LGBTQ Bands. 2020 was the 50th anniversary of the first Pride March in NYC.
A Christmas Festival....since we missed last year's Holiday concert and 2020 was the 70th anniversary of the piece's publication
Something to commemorate 100 years since the start of the Roarin' 20s
And since we haven't done the 4th of July in two years....Stars and Stripes Forever.
